ADOPTING:
  • Adopting a cat has many advantages
    • Adult cats are easier to supervise than kittens.
    • They may already be litter trained.
    • They may already be accustomed to other animals or children.
  • Whether your cat is an adult or a kitten, you will need to prepare for them. Think about what, where and how your cat will eat. Where will she sleep? Cat beds and cat towers are great options. And don’t forget toys to help stimulate and keep them active, scratching posts for them to use their natural instincts and not destroy your furniture.
CARE & HEALTH:
  • Please spay or neuter your cat. This is healthier for the animal and helps to cut down on the number of cats left homeless or wind up at the shelter each year.
  • Cats should be fed twice each day. In order to avoid weight issues, measure your cat's food and offer it as a meal, rather than allowing feeding at will.
  • Cats need access to fresh, clean water at all times. Be sure to wash out the water bowl each day.
  • Cats are carnivores and require Taurine, an amino acid that is important for normal heart, vision and reproductive functions. However, cats cannot produce Taurine and have to obtain it from their food. Taurine is found only in animal-based protein which means that all cats need meat-based diets to stay healthy.
  • Keep your cat's litter box clean, as cats are naturally fastidious and a clean litter box increases the likelihood that the cat will use it. Scoop the litter box at least once a day, and wash it with hot water and dish soap periodically. Also, cats like privacy so look for a place that is convenient but quiet.
  • Be sure to take your cat to the veterinarian for regular check-ups and vaccinations. If you don't have a vet, ask your cat-owning friends or family members for a recommendation.
  • Grooming your cat often does more than keep excess hair off your furniture, it also strengthens the bond you share, keeps her coat shiny and healthy, and reduces hairballs.
SAFETY:
  • Keep your feline companion safe by keeping him indoors or safely confined to your property.
  • Always use a cat carrier when transporting your pet.
  • Make it a habit to check the washer and dryer before using - just to make sure that your cat hasn't found a cozy place to hide out. The same goes for drawers, closets and cupboards - make sure there are no surprise visitors.
  • Cats should always wear a break-away collar and a visible ID tag that includes your name and contact information.
ENVIRONMENT & ENRICHMENT:
  • Cats may seem aloof and independent, but making regular time to play will provide him with the physical and mental stimulation he needs and create a strong bond between the two of you.
  • Give your cat toys and scratching posts to distract from household goods. Cats love to play and lots of things can become toys - ping pong balls or a handle-less paper bag, for instance.
  • Cats are natural roamers and so confinement in a small space should be minimalized as much as possible. Providing a climbing tree or tower will encourage exploration, give him a safe place to hang-out and provide natural exercise.
  • Cats are natural hunters and there are many games to be made of this. Try hiding dry food in a toy for him to fish out, or invest in toys that move like real prey.
  • Set aside time every day to interact and play with your cat. You'll both be better off for it.
